Brownie Root Beer
Brownie Root Beer is a carbonated soft drink originally produced by the Atlas Beverages in Detroit, Michigan (Hamtramck).
Founded in 1929 by Polish immigrant Walter Tomaszewski, the Atlas Beverages sold such flavors as Brownie Caramel Cream Root Beer, Bulldog Ginger Bee, Cream, Strawberry and Club Soda. The bottles were available in cases and were sold to homes and local businesses.
The company mascot was a little, smiling Brownie reminiscent of the impish characters created by Palmer Cox in the late 1800s.
When the company founder retired, he passed the business to his sons, Butch and Leonard. They ran the company together until Walter retired and Butch bought his share of the business. Atlas Beverages closed about 1996 and the building was sold around 2003. The building has been demolished and replaced by a strip mall.
